I’m Gargi Sharma, a ceramic artist originally from India and currently based in Austin, Texas. I started out studying architecture and eventually wandered into ceramic and glass design.
Before finding my way more deeply into clay, I worked as a designer in education. Teaching and building curricula reminded me of my own childlike way of looking at the world, something I still carry into my studio practice. I like to call it “I see stuff in other stuff”—a habit of finding forms, stories, and characters hiding inside everyday objects.
My upbringing in the ancient city of Haridwar, also known as the Gateway to the Gods, immersed me in a landscape of mythology, temple ruins, and cultural objects that shaped my imagination early on. My current work reflects the influence of architectural forms and India’s cultural landscape, with surfaces that embrace weathering, decay, and corrosion.
Artist Statement
My ceramic practice is an act of collecting memories from the fragments of daily life. Using handbuilding techniques, I reconstruct these memories into familiar forms that carry the passage of time through surfaces replicating rust, weathering, and corrosion. These transformations create works that blur the line between the new, the abandoned, and the antiques preserved in a museum.
